A practical checklist for your next flat viewing
Look beyond the listing photos. Check the space, ask useful questions, and leave with details you can compare.
Before you visit
Confirm that the flat is still available, ask for the exact location, and check the proposed move-in date. Write down your must-haves so an attractive interior does not distract you from an unsuitable commute or budget.
- Confirm rent, deposit, maintenance, and any brokerage charge.
- Ask which furniture and appliances are included.
- Choose a visit time that lets you see the rooms in daylight.
Check how the flat works
With the person showing the flat, check taps, switches, windows, and door locks. Look for signs of dampness and ask about water supply, power backup, internet options, and repairs. Check mobile reception in the rooms where you would work or sleep.
- Notice ventilation, natural light, and nearby noise.
- Check lift access, parking, and the route into the building.
- Ask about visitor rules, pets, and shared facilities.
Keep notes you can compare
Record the total expected monthly cost, what needs fixing, and which questions remain unanswered. Ask permission before taking photos. Confirm important details directly with the owner or authorised representative before committing to a place.
