Compare the full cost of a rental, not just the rent
Build a clearer rental budget by separating monthly bills, move-in costs, and shared household expenses.
List the recurring costs
Start with the advertised rent, then ask which other bills apply. Maintenance, electricity, water, internet, parking, and cleaning can change the monthly total. Note whether each cost is fixed, usage-based, or included in rent.
- Use the same categories for every flat you compare.
- Include your expected commuting costs.
- Mark unknown costs instead of treating them as zero.
Separate the cost of moving in
Keep the security deposit, any brokerage charge, moving costs, and furniture purchases separate from your monthly budget. A refundable deposit still affects the cash you need upfront. Confirm payment terms and what is included before making a decision.
Agree on the split before moving
For a shared flat, write down the household total and each person’s share. Equal splitting is simple, but discuss whether different room sizes or individual services call for another arrangement. Make sure everyone agrees on the method and payment dates.
- Keep a shared list of bills and due dates.
- Record who paid and who still needs to contribute.
- Review the budget when rent, bills, or household members change.
